BLOC Coffee Shop

I stopped by the BLOC Coffee Shop open house on Sunday. For those of you that don’t remember, it’s the building at the corner of Price and Hawthorne Ave. I previously mentioned the building renovation. The building on the south side of Price is now complete and the interior looks sharp. The building houses a couple pool tables, foosball, a small stage for a solo act and the most exciting: an espresso machine. Maybe I’m exaggerating a bit on the last point, but the shop does support a full espresso menu, blended drinks and smoothies. I’m still a little confused on the hours and general operation, but so far that corner looks incredible. There’s something about the open glass windows that restores faith and trust in the community.

The list of BLOC events are on their web site. I’m assuming the site will be updated with the grand opening day in the near future.

Thanksgiving Day Parade Grand Marshal

The Enquirer announced earlier this week that Dave Allen will be the grand marshal of the Price Hill Thanksgiving Day Parade.  Dave is a long time Price Hill resident, music teacher at Elder High School and director of music at St. Williams Church.

Back From Vacation

Sorry for the lack of posts lately.  I went east to visit family for about a week and came back to mountain of work.

Here are a few bits and pieces that have been in the mix since my last post:

  • Join the Westwood Concern and Price Hill Civic Club on Monday November 5th from 7-8:30p at Price Hill Chili to thank Captain Raabe for his service at District 3.  Captain Raabe is leaving District three after 7+ years of service to the community.
  • Friday, October 26th is another Good Guy Loitering date.  Meet at St. Lawrence around 7:30.
  • I hate to link to the spawn of satan (i.e. MySpace) but the Warsaw Project Gallery, an art gallery located on Warsaw Avenue (at Hawthorne Ave), has both a web page and a MySpace profile.  The Enquirer mentioned it recently.  Unfortunately my post is about a week late so anyone interested has to wait until next month to visit the gallery.
  • At the last EPHIA meeting the proposal to make the property currently occupied by Whittier School available to District 3 was mentioned.  District 3 has been interested in a new building and more parking for quite a while.  Kevin has more on the development at Building Cincinnati.

That’s it for now.

Good Guys Loitering Gets More Press

Local 12 gave the Good Guys Loitering event that I mentioned last week more press.

Everyone attending feels that the events are working.

If you would like more information about participating, contact District 3 Police at (513) 263-8300.

Good Loiterers

I was going to save this for a later post but apparently my Inbox doesn’t want me go to sleep.

Tomorrow, Friday, September 14th, is a scheduled “Good Guy Loiterers” outing for Price Hill.  Meet at St. Lawrence Church at 7:30p to get assigned a street corner.  I wasn’t aware that these events had made it to the local media, but Local 12 has a more in depth article.  The article mentions the improvements and plans for fighting crime in the neighborhood and claims that violent crime is down 7% in West Price Hill and 23% in East Price Hill (not Gill).

…perhaps a local food or beverage company could sponsor these events and provide sustenance for the “good loiterers”?

News Roundup: TIFs and Streetscapes, Local Artwork and No Barge Terminal?!

Here’s the roundup…

Kevin covered the TIFs and Streetscape story that affects Price Hill among other Cincinnati neighborhoods. Basically there will delays in the various projects since the districts must be amended.

This Sunday, September 16th, Price Hill Will and the Price Hill Historical Society are hosting a reception to celebrate artwork created by several local students. The event is from 1pm to 2pm at the 3640 Warsaw Ave.

Great news came yesterday regarding the proposed barge terminal development in Lower Price Hill. City Council’s economic development committee passed a motion barring negotiations with any industry for use of the property and stated that a 90 day period be observed to consider other options. It’s about time.

I’ve been checking out a “new” web-2.0-social-bookmarking-news-aggregating site outside.in. It’s no reason to jump up and down, but it’s interesting to see articles gathered together and many local blogs on a map (I’m still a bit confused how all of the got there). It would probably be cooler if Cincinnati was one of the bloggiest cities in America, but I’ll say we’re shooting for quality not quantity.

Local Mural Ideas

A meeting will be held at Price Hill Will on Thursday, August 16th, to discuss the creation of a mural somewhere in East Price Hill. More details regarding the meeting and project are at the Community Press.

ArtWorks will be painting the mural as part of their MuralWorks program. Photos of their work from other local neighborhoods are available on their site.

Holy Family-Mt. Echo Energy 5K

The 2nd annual run in Price Hill that loops through Mount Echo park is coming next month. Last year’s race was awesome. It’s the only run I’ve been to that offers fresh waffles at the finish line. Don’t hold me to that this year, I’m not sure if the waffles are still being offered. Regardless, it’s a great race and you get to see Cincinnati from the view atop Mt. Echo park. If you don’t run, you can still walk. In fact, the slower people get to pass the skyline more casually so they can take it all in.

This years run/walk is on September 29th at 9am. Parking is available in Holy Family Church/School parking lot. More info is available at Steve Prescott’s site and you can register online.
